Four S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics seniors have been named candidates for the 2010 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The nearly 50-year-old program honors young people for outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and community service.
The students - Ramiz Hamid of Saint Helena, Millie Griffin of Florence, Dominic Ranz Ebarle Errazo of Goose Creek and Somin (Susie) Lee of Greenville - are among 68 S.C. seniors notified about the honor.
"It's nothing short of amazing that our tiny school has four candidates for Presidential Scholarships," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president.
"Congratulations to Dom, Millie, Ramiz and Susie. They and their families should be very proud of their ability and hard work. I wish them all the best in the competition."
A review committee will narrow a list of 3,000 candidates to about 500 honorees in the semifinal round. Approximately 120 students will make it to the finals and be invited to an awards program in Washington, DC, in June.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
