Four Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) 2010 graduates have been named Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship recipients by the South Carolina Department of Education. They join 102 students from across the state in earning the award, which promotes academic excellence using federal funds.

But the 57 rising seniors at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) have donned white coats and are spending six weeks working alongside professional scientists in research and development labs across South Carolina.

For the fifth year in a row, the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) has been named one of the Top 20 "public elite" high schools in the nation by Newsweek magazine. The Hartsville-based school is the only Palmetto State school to earn this distinction.

Sixty seniors from across the state graduated from the GSSM May 29, earning in excess of $10.2 million in scholarship offerings. One hundred percent of the graduates will attend college with 72 percent electing to remain in the Palmetto State in the fall. Notable out-of-state schools attended by GSSM graduates of 2010 include Yale, Brown, Drexel, Vanderbilt, Emory, Wellesley and Georgetown.
